The 27th Annual Cock Island Race

The 27th Race to Cock Island
Raw, unedited photos have been posted on my Olde Towne Photos Facebook Page. When I get a chance, I'll photoshop each and every one. The sun showed dust spots on my lens at a certain angle.

Vito Dumas

Goal almost reached for the recognition of Vito Dumas and include in the "Gallery of Popular Heroes of the Casa Rosada" on the Change.org site.  Over 2,000 of the necessary 3000 signatures.

from Wikipedia:

Vito Dumas (September 26, 1900 - March 28, 1965) was an Argentine single-handedsailor.
In 1942, while the world was in the depths of World War II, he set out on a single-handed circumnavigation of the Southern Ocean. He left Buenos Aires in June, sailing LEGH II, a 31-foot ketch an acronym representing "four names which marked my life". He had only the most basic and makeshift gear; he had no radio, for fear of being shot as a spy, and was forced to stuff his clothes with newspaper to keep warm.
With only three landfalls, the legs of his trip were the longest that had been made by a single-hander, and in the most ferocious oceans on the Earth; but most of all, it was a powerful retort to a world which had chosen to divide itself by war.[1] He recounted the experience in his book Los Cuarenta Bramadores: La Vuelta al Mundo Por la "Ruta Imposible" (Alone Through The Roaring Forties).
He donated his boat to the Argentine Navy for training, but after a few years it was neglected, broke its mooring chain, and was wrecked on the rocky shore. A wealthy Argentine yachtsman paid to have it restored and donated it to the Argentina Naval Museum in Tigre, a nautical river town on a backwater of the River Plate. The Legh II is now on display in Tigre, which is a short train ride from Buenos Aires.
Dumas was the inspiration for an Argentine tango entitled Navegante, written by Jaime Yanin (music) and José Horacio Staffolani (lyrics). It was recorded in Buenos Aires on 5 August 1943 by the Orquesta típica of Carlos di Sarli, featuring Roberto Rufino on vocals.

Vito Dumas was a kind of marine monk, a true hermit from the sea. In March 1965, he died abandoned by all, ruined and in a state of poor health.

HNoMS Statsraad Lehmkuhl to Visit Norfolk

HNoMS Statsraad Lehmkuhl
Thursday, November 7 - 11, 2013
Docked at Otter Berth, Downtown Norfolk

Follow the Ship

The public is invited to tour the ship starting Friday, November 8th thru Sunday, November 10th from 10am - 4pm daily. Ship tours are free and open to the public.

The Statsraad Lehmkuhl is sailed by the Royal Norwegian Naval Academy's first year officer cadets who are participating in leadership training and teambuilding during the trip. The cadets also get a strong foundation of basic seamanship during their weeks onboard. Stripped of modern communication technology, the students are forced to work together to overcome the timeless challenges and dangers of travelling the seas by sail. Statsraad Lehmkuhl has been part of the basic training program since 2002, whereby the Royal Norwegian Navy leases the ship for several months every year.
Norfolk has become a favorite port of call for the ship and her crew; this will be the 9th consecutive year that the ship has called on Norfolk as part of their sail-training schedule. The port visit is sponsored by Norfolk Festevents, Ltd. Guests are encouraged to witness Statsraad Lehmkuhl's ceremonial arrival into port, complete with song, at approximately 8am on Thursday, Nov. 7.
Public Visitation Schedule: Friday, November 8 - Sunday. November 10 from 10am - 4pm daily. Ship tours are free and open to the public.

Remember the USS Pueblo (AGR-2)

Monday, July 29, 2013

Since the USS Pueblo is in the news recently, I thought I'd share a few sites that deal with some historic events involving the ship, her capture and her brave men, some of whom I knew.

Remember the USS Pueblo (AGR-2)

The USS Pueblo (AGER-2) was captured by the North Koreans in international waters on
January 23, 1968.  The crew spent the next 11 months as prisoners and were released on
December 23, 1968.  Today, 43 years later, the Pueblo is still in the hands of the North
Koreans.  Our crew now numbering 66 from our original total of 83 the day of the capture.
